Fireplace Insert Installation – What’s Involved?
Your old masonry fireplace looks great, but it’s heating your attic more than your living room. If you’re tired of watching your energy bills climb every time you light a fire, a fireplace insert might be exactly what you need.
What Actually Is a Fireplace Insert?
Think of it as a wood stove that fits inside your existing fireplace opening. It’s a self-contained unit with its own firebox and glass doors that slides right into that drafty old fireplace you’ve got now. The whole point is efficiency.
Traditional masonry fireplaces are notoriously wasteful. They pull heated air from your house and send it straight up the chimney while barely radiating any heat back into the room. An insert changes that equation completely, turning your fireplace from a pretty decoration into an actual heat source. We’re talking about going from maybe 10-15% efficiency to 70-80% or higher.
Getting Your Chimney Ready
Here’s what most homeowners don’t realize: you can’t just shove an insert into your fireplace and call it a day. The chimney needs to be in good shape first.
We’ll start with a level two inspection, which means we’re going up on the roof with a camera to look inside your flue. Kansas City’s freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on masonry, and we need to know if there are cracks, missing mortar, or deteriorating flue tiles before we proceed. If your chimney has been sitting unused for years, there’s a decent chance we’ll find some issues.
The flue also needs to be properly sized for the insert. Most inserts require a liner installation because your existing flue is probably too large. A 6-inch stainless steel liner is pretty standard for most wood-burning inserts. This liner runs from the top of the insert all the way up through your chimney and connects to a new cap at the top.
The Installation Process
Installation day typically takes between four and eight hours, depending on your chimney height and whether we run into any surprises. And trust me, old chimneys always have surprises.
First, we’ll protect your floors and furniture because this gets messy despite our best efforts. Then we measure everything twice. The insert needs to fit through your fireplace opening, which isn’t always guaranteed even when you think you’ve measured carefully. Older homes especially can have openings that narrow as they go back.
Once we’ve confirmed fit, we install the liner from inside the fireplace, feeding it up through the chimney. Someone’s on the roof to pull it through and secure it at the top. The liner gets insulated as it goes up, which is required by code in most situations and helps with draft performance. In a two-story house, we’re looking at roughly 25-30 feet of liner on average.
The insert itself weighs anywhere from 300 to 500 pounds. It slides into the fireplace opening on a hearth pad and gets secured to the damper area or firebox. We connect it to the liner, seal everything up, and install the surround panel that covers the gap between the insert and your fireplace facing.
The Surround Panel Matters More Than You’d Think
That panel isn’t just cosmetic. It blocks air from going around the insert and up the chimney, forcing all the exhaust through the unit itself where it should go. We see DIY installations all the time where someone skipped properly sealing this, and they wonder why their insert doesn’t draft right.
Costs You Should Expect
A quality wood-burning insert runs between $2,500 and $5,000 for the unit itself. Installation adds another $1,500 to $3,000 depending on chimney height, liner requirements, and whether any repairs are needed first. Gas inserts tend to run a bit higher on the unit cost, and they require running a gas line if you don’t already have one in the fireplace.
Look, here’s the thing about going cheap on this: you’re installing something that’s going to have 1,000-degree fires burning inside it for the next 20 years. This isn’t where you want to pinch pennies. A properly installed quality insert will outlast a budget model by a decade or more.
Gas vs. Wood: Making the Choice
Wood inserts give you that real fire experience with actual logs and the smell and crackle you’re looking for. They put out serious heat too. The downside? You’re hauling wood, cleaning ash, and doing more maintenance.
Gas inserts are convenience incarnate. Flip a switch, instant fire, zero cleanup. They don’t heat quite as intensely as wood, but they’re way more controllable. For Kansas City homeowners who want supplemental heat without the work, gas makes a lot of sense. When we get those January cold snaps and you just want to take the edge off the heating bill, a gas insert delivers.
Pellet inserts split the difference but require electricity to run the auger and fans. When we get ice storms and lose power, which happens at least once most winters around here, that pellet stove won’t run even if you’ve got fuel.
After Installation: What to Know
Your new insert needs a break-in period. The first few fires should be small and shouldn’t run at full blast. This cures the paint and prevents that “new insert” smell from overwhelming your house all at once. Open some windows for those first couple burns.
You’ll need annual inspections and cleaning, same as before. Actually, even more important now because you’re probably going to use it more. The glass doors need regular cleaning if you want to see the fire, and wood inserts need ash removal every few weeks during heavy use.
The blower fan, if your insert has one, makes a noticeable difference in heat distribution. Some people love it, some find it noisy. They’re usually adjustable, and you don’t have to run it if you don’t want to.
Kansas City Considerations
Our weather here swings wildly, and that affects how you’ll use an insert. Those shoulder seasons in fall and spring when it’s 65 during the day but drops to 40 at night? Perfect insert weather. You don’t need to fire up the whole furnace, just run the insert for a few hours in the evening.
Winter humidity levels matter too. Gas inserts don’t dry out your air the way forced-air heating does, which is nice when January hits and everything’s already crackling with static electricity. Wood inserts actually do dry things out a bit, so you might want to run a humidifier.
